What happens if I can’t attend a lesson at the scheduled time?

Life is hectic and sometimes it’s not always possible to keep prior arrangements. There will be no charge for lessons cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be charged at full lesson price.

Are online lessons effective?

The quick answer is YES. Online lessons can be just as effective as lessons in person. The only difference is the student and teacher are not in the same room or even the same country! This is actually a big advantage in today’s world, online lessons are convenient, give you more flexibility than classroom lessons, and save valuable time as they can all be done from the comfort of your own home. In my experience I am able to deliver the same quality of teaching online as I am in person.

What do I need for online lessons?

Firstly, a fast internet connection is essential. Secondly, you can choose to take the lessons on a computer, tablet or smartphone. A computer is recommended but mobile devices can also work well, depending on your needs. Lessons take place on Skype or Zoom, which are free to download and easy to use. Download Skype here. Download Zoom here. The use of headphones is also highly recommended to block out any background noise and get the most out of your online experience. In addition, the following things will also be very helpful to bring along; a sense of humour, learning English should be fun; patience, learning a language can be a long and sometimes frustrating process but don’t give up; time and willingness to learn, it will take equal measures of time and dedication on your part to achieve your goals.

Yes. During the first lesson I can assess your level and give you feedback on the areas where I think you need to improve. You can also take a quick online grammar test on the Cambridge English website if you require an immediate answer. Take the test here.

There are a huge number of online tutors and language platforms. Why should I choose Speak English with Jo?

I believe that the individual approach I take to students is rare. I fully recognise that everyone is different and there is no standard way to teach everyone. The lessons are bespoke, designed based on your specific needs and progress. In addition to this I am open, friendly and good at listening to you. I also understand everything you are going through, every high and low you have or will experience as a language learner. I have been through the embarrassment, the feelings of nerves and stupidity, the euphoria when someone finally understands you, in fact I still live it on a daily basis here in Spain. Some days we are full of confidence and talking non-stop. Others, we don’t understand anything that’s happening around us and feel completely lost. You are not alone, it’s all part of the process.

How long will it take me to learn English?

How long is a piece of string? (British English phrase which is used when something cannot be given a finite measurement. In other words a piece of string is as long or as short as you want it to be!)

This is one of the questions I get asked on a daily basis and it is almost impossible to answer. There is no accurate time frame for learning or a ready-made formula for success. It depends on a variety of factors; the time you are able to dedicate to practising, your motivation, your ability, the level of English you wish to reach and your starting level. Some people are happy with their English after studying for 1 year, whilst others might take 5 years, 10 years, or a lifetime! Learning is limitless, it just depends on how far you want to go on your journey.

My listening skills are good but when I have to speak I freeze, what can I do?

This problem is more common than you think but don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place. This is Speak English with Jo and that’s exactly what we do.
